REGISTER AS AN ORGAN AND TISSUE DONOR AND SAVE LIVES
During DonateLife Week, we encourage Australians to take a moment to check if they’re registered as organ and tissue donors.
Many Australians assume they’re already registered or think they can register as organ and tissue donors through their driver licence, despite South Australia being the only state or territory that currently allows this option.
It only takes a minute to check, update your details or register in your Medicare online account in myGov or the myGov app, or the DonateLife website.
That minute can mean the world to someone waiting for a second chance at life.
When she was a young girl, Luka-Angel’s dreams of dancing felt far away as she was too unwell. A heart transplant at 13 changed everything. Now 23 years old, Luka-Angel is living life to the fullest, thanks to the generous donor and their family who gave her a second chance.
There are still around 2,000 Australians on the waitlist for an organ transplant. Another 14,000 people are on dialysis for kidney failure, many who may benefit from a kidney transplant.
After registering, it’s important to tell your family. In Australia, your family is always asked to agree to donation. Most families agree when they know you want to be a donor.
DonateLife Week 2026 runs from Sunday 26 July to Sunday 2 August. For more information, visit donatelife.gov.au
Quotes attributable to the Minister for Government Services, Katy Gallagher:
“This DonateLife Week, take a minute to tick donor registration off your to-do list.
“With the myGov app you can register, check and update your donation preferences anytime in just a few taps.
“You can also use your Medicare online account on the myGov website or the DonateLife website to register.
“Adding your digital organ donor card to your myGov app wallet makes it easy to check your donation preferences, and over 400,000 people have already done this.”
Quotes attributable to the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Rebecca White:
“Many Australians think they’re registered, but they’re not. If you’re unsure, it’s important to check your registration.
“Most families agree to donation if they know their loved one had registered. This drops significantly where families aren’t aware.
“Organ donation can only go ahead with your family’s support, so if your family aren’t aware you want to be a donor they may not know what to do.
“One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and change the lives of many more through eye and tissue donation.”
