The PM made a promise. Today, we delivered on it.
Just moments ago, Parliament passed our legislation to wipe 20% off student debt and raise the repayment threshold to $67,000.
The Albanese Government is busy turning promises into progress, and I wanted to let you know what this change means for people in Canberra.
Thanks to the legislation passed just now, more than 55,000 Canberrans will have 20% wiped off their student debts.
On top of that, we're also raising repayment thresholds to reduce pressure on people when they can least afford it.
These changes will make life easier for students and graduates as they start out in their careers, start families, juggle a mortgage or save for a home.
And here's what makes me proudest: this was our first bill. Not something we got around to eventually - it was our absolute first priority after winning government.
We said it would be the very first thing that we'd do once Parliament returned. And now we've delivered on that promise.
This is just the beginning. Through the Universities Accord, we're building something bigger - a tertiary system where your chances don't depend on your postcode, your parents or where you come from.
Helping with the cost of living, investing in the next generation, and supporting workers and families are all top of Labor's agenda. And we're absolutely focused on delivering for all Australians.
There's lots to do, and as your Senator for the ACT, I'll keep working hard to deliver for our community.
